Merlot hails from the Bordeaux region of France and became the go to red wine in the United States in the early 1990’s. The film “Sideways” famously demoralized Merlot with the line, “I’M NOT DRINKING ANY F***ING MERLOT!” Sadly, what is not portrayed in the film is that Merlot was his ex’s favorite varietal. In fact, the prized anniversary wine he drinks at Orcutt Burgers is a 1961 Chateau Cheval Blanc (a blend of Merlot and Cab Franc). This iconic film led to the idea that Merlot is an unacceptable wine for sophisticated wine drinkers.
